An old(er) art, and Crowrang progress...

OK, so to keep this with some content other than "Look at slightly updated WIP!" I'm going to be featuring old arts now and then, and by that I mean stuff I haven't posted in this blog before, so uh, everything pretty much, hahaha. Anyway, today I wanted to talk about one of my favorite things I've ever drawn, the "Fun With Dr. Cossack" piece. For those of you who follow me on y! or FA, you've probably seen this before as it's one of my most popular drawings as well as one of my personal favs (and thusly often featured submission there).

I like this particular drawing for a lot of reasons -- it was really a step up from what I was drawing at the time, and it's always good to feel a "level up." I also was very interested in the subject matter, and so I tried very hard with it (probably the reason it's better quality than other things I was drawing, ahaha). Even now I think it looks pretty good, though I've learned a bit since then and can do many things better IMO. But I still like it :D

Of course, anyone who knows me knows I have a huge hard-on for robots and I'm OBSESSED with Mega Man series, and I'm quite fond of older men and bearded men. So this is pretty much a big image full of stuff I love.

I picked the four Robot Masters in the image somewhat at random; I mean, they're from the DCN series, so they're Cossack's bots, but I mostly just wanted to put in ones that would fit the composition better (not that I really have an eye for composition or anything...) and would be easy enough to draw. I also definitely wanted to include Pharaoh Man, as I think he's very hot, and I've spent plenty of nights alone in bed with a hand in my pants and Pharaoh Man in my mind, ahahaha. Yes, I'm a bit pathetic, but whatever, I like it.

I'm not exactly fond of cum, but I do love sweat. I original drew a "clean" version of this without any of the juicy stuff, which you can find here. I actually prefer that version, but the 'messy' version seems to be more popular, so I figured I'd put that up for the feature.

Dr. Cossack is awesome, and everyone on y! should totally join the Cossack Club there :3 Jus' sayin'. Oh and draw him :D

And if you want to see how ol' Rangy (O_o) is comin' along, I've started coloring him... I put the base colors down, which makes him look like this for now.

Though I've also started painting, and right now the WIP painty looks like this in the sections I've started on:

:3 Not much to say about it, I guess. I'll work on it more to make it a little more smooth and have a bit more accent to it, but that's probably a lot like what the finished think will look like. I didn't really work on it today (all that coloring was done yesterday) as I've been hanging with X and I played Command Mission and stuff like ALL DAY. O_o I love that game...!

Lineart! And my roachie :D

So, if you were following the previous post, you saw I was working on a picture of Wind Crowrang from Mega Man X7. Well, I have finally completed the lineart for it!

Notice that a lot of parts have changed and it has really cleaned up a bit! There are still parts I'm not completely happy with but overall I think I like it a lot. Plus Crowrang is just so damned sexy, ahaha.

I also though I will make a post about my roach character, essentially what you'd call my 'fursona,' I guess, though he's not hairy... but I guess he's in a way a 'sona of me. Essentially though I designed him both to be like me but also to be hawtness. Isn't that what you're supposed to do...?

The intro post has the standard avatar-ish picture I use everywhere of him :3 Elsewise, here's some other art of him:

This is the original sketch I did of him to see what he would look like. There are some important features:

- He is based on various bug and monster characters I've seen from some of my favorite artists.

- The species he is mostly based on is Periplaneta americana, or the common American house roach.

- He is bulky. I made him this way for many reasons. One is that since he's a projection of myself, I am often self-conscious of my size, but I also like my size. Of course IRL I am a chubby guy, so I tried to incorporate this into him through his large/bulbous abdomen parts. Roaches also are infamous to be resistant to lots of things, so I made his exoskeleton big and armor-like. Lastly, I just think bulky characters are sexy :3

- He has a very "feral" head. I did this because I think bug/arthropod faces are very cute, plus I didn't want him to have a human-looking head because I thought it would look awkward. I also thought it would be a drawing challenge. I've come up with a sort of simplified mouth parts that are still based on real roach faces :)

- His colors are not my favorites. They are supposed to be based on the actual colors of his species. Of course it's somewhat loose -- I made them in colors that I often work with (a more 'kitschy' pallet), but those are generally colors that you find on a real roachie :)

- With his more feral-legs and human like double-arms, he has a total of 6 limbs like a real insect :D I have seen a lot of bug-based anthro characters with the standard human set (two arms, two legs), but I've also seen some with a total of 6 like this. I definitely wanted 6 because I wanted him to be more bug-like, but also because I think you can do sexier things with 4 hands rather than 2 ;)

- Important accessories are mustache and necktie. Of course I draw him with tea a lot, but it's not like he can just constantly hold a mug. The mustache is not fake, in my fantasy world he really grows it :) Also he takes very good care of it and it's well groomed (like my 'stache IRL, too XZD) He almost always wears a necktie. Even to sleep. o_o; This is both supportive of my necktie fetish, but also it has a lot of emo meaning behind it that I won't get into. That's just for me.

As far as personality goes, he is a character I use both to express and entertain myself, and so his personality is just mine. I don't make up interesting personalities for him or anything, as he's not really a character I'm trying to develop, but an actual avatar of myself, I guess.

Anywhere, here are some more drawings:

Of course, pronsy one :D

After this picture was done, I noticed you couldn't see the roach peen I designed very well :( It actually had a lot more detail in the sketching stage. But I'm still kinda working on the design for what it should look like, but I think I have a good idea. It kinda is just based on monsters and stuff, as bugs don't really have penises or anything. Well, they have parts, but nothing like this, so I get to make it up myself. It's pretty different from other bug characters I've seen, though. But it does share some similarities.

I wanted to make it non-human shape because I felt that human-shape would look terribly awkward. TBQH I am not particularly sexually attracted to the design or anything, but I do like the way it looks. Also it comes to kindof a point, and that's where the hole is. It's a bit weird, I know. It kindof reminds me of a cake decorator >_>

Also I forgot to mention before that he has head hair, too. It's always in a ponytail, because the rest of his head hair is shaved so that only that part is there anyway. He got the hair tie from Zoruark, who got it from Basch, who got it off a dead guy.

Also, the semen is human-like. Again bugs don't particularly have semen in the same sense as people, so I got to make it up. I've seen bug characters with all kinds of interesting juices, but I like this simple human-like kind. I actually don't really like cum at all, but...

I don't like this picture at all. Mostly because the human character's anatomy is totally broken. But I do like the way Roachie came out for the most part. BTW, this character has no real name or anything. I just kindof call him Roachie. Again, any name that you can call me, you can call Roachie, too. Of course you can't call me Roachie. I'm... humanie. Or something.

The human character is a whole 'nother story for another time :O

This was a commission for jade-scale on FA. Actually I never received payment for this, but the payment method was a bit strange -- we were exchanging some books for the art. He never asked me for my address to send the books or anything, and I'm uncomfortable saying anything about it, so he got a free art. I'm not really complaining, though, because it was fun to draw.

I focused a lot on drawing Jade, so Roachie is random and misproportioned (not that I have any set proportions for him yet) and takes a backseat in this image. Also note that all the focus I was doing on drawing Jade made me forget to draw the necktie .___.

Here's just two giftarts I've received that show this character :3 Well, I had to ask for them, but still :D

Crowrang Lineart Method X3

I will make the first post here discussing a bit how I draw currently. I actually change the method to my sketching often, but this is just what I'm currently doing. And I'm going to show you my current WIP as I do so :3

This is all done in openCanvas on a Wacom Bamboo Fun. My computer is really old and I can't use any more complicated programs than that, and I don't have a scanner anymore so I can't really do pencil stuff... so all my art is done completely in openCanvas on two layers at 4000x4000px resolution or less (usually I start with 2000x2000 and make it bigger as needed...)

Also, this is not meant as a tutorial by any means. I just wanted to show how I usually go about drawings, but I'm not saying this is how other people should do it or anything... I don't even really know what I'm doing. If you are also an artist, feel free to share advice and stuff. :3

OK, firstly I start out by doing really ugly sketch :) Sometimes I do little thumbnails first... just to get an idea of what the overall picture will look like. But with something simple like a character standing there, I will just start drawing. Depending on who/what I am drawing, I will start in different places.

I just start drawing basic shapes like circles, ovals, squares, etc., and I slowly 'shape' and detail them... it's kind of like working with clay. You make kind of a basic shape, then slowly mold it into what you want. To make sure things line up I will draw lines all over the place to connect stuff.

As you can see, after a while, it starts to take a shape:

There are lines everywhere and it looks really messy. It takes me a long time to mold stuff like this... I don't know if there is a faster or more efficient method, but I feel this gives me the best results. Remember I completely taught myself how to draw by like... guessing what I should be doing... so this is all I really know how to do, ahaha. Some parts were erased so I could tell where shapes should be more easily (you should see what it looks like before erasing... its just a mass of scribbles and you can't see anything.)

BTW, I do this first sketch in different colors every time. Recently I've been on a grey kick, but I usually do a light blue color. Sometimes doing it in grey makes it harder when I am doing the darker lines, but since the lines are pretty simple, it's no big deal I think. I also like to use green and pink because I like those colors.

Anyway, that first step was just to get the shapes of everything down. The next thing I have to do is decide what lines I am "keeping," because as you can see there are tons of lines and obviously I don't want to use all those. So I just take a black pen and kinda sketch roughly over the lines where it seems normal for them to go. Part of the reason sketches often look better than lineart is because with a sketch, your brain will just kindof "pick" the lines that look best and the form will just 'look right' ... I try to take that feeling and pick the lines from what just feels right... it's drawing very openly... it's kindof hard to explain how I pick where to draw, though. It takes a lot of practice. And I'm still not that good at it...

Anyway, it will come to this after I do that:

As you can see, there is a lot less clutter, but the lines are not very clean or neat or anything. But now you can clearly see the shapes of things and where things should go. BTW I drew those black lines in a new layer and then just disappeared the lower/sketch layer.

From this, I start to "clean" up the lines. I keep the sketchy part invisible and just start filling out the lines more. I make the lines bolder and darker. Also, looking at the cleaner lines, I am able to see parts that I want to change the shape of. So I'll change the shape of those and then bolden up those lines, too. It looks a bit like this during this process:

Notice that his beak changed shape. Some other things changed shape and were added, but that is the most noticeable one, I think. I do not spend a lot of time on this "bolding" and fixing stage unless I have to redraw lots of parts because it doesn't really do anything but fix some shapes. The bolding just helps the next part become a little less tedious. I just need all of the lines to be solid and connect everywhere. The next part is hard if there are broken or fuzzy lines.

Also "small line" written in the corner was just a note to myself to make sure I don't forget that I had a new idea for a certain part and to try it out when I get around to fixing up that part later. I don't often write notes to myself, but I think I should.

The next part is pretty much creating the finished lineart.

You can see how from the last step some parts have changed. This last picture is of course not finished, but still much in progress. I have cleaned up parts like the dome of the head and the eyes. I just do this by using a little eraser and going over lines and erasing the gross parts around them until the line looks good. It's a lot like the "molding" I talked about before, but now it's molding lines. Since I'm just using a simple pen brush it probably cannot get as complicated or as good as other artists. But I can at least make them look pretty clean.

Notice that I also erased some parts completely and redrew them. It's important to keep redrawing parts at every step, I think. Never consider any part of the drawing done until the entire thing is done. And even then you can go back and fix things.

Also I used a smaller pen to go in and add finer details. Crowrang is just big pieces of metal so he doesn't have many fine details, but here I changed the outline under his eyes and the "shape" of the crystal on his head with a smaller pen this way.

Also I am trying to learn how to make more dynamic lineart by using different widths and things, but I don't really know how to do it very well. I try to make lines thicker when they are closer to the viewer or under shadows. But I haven't gotten a very good hang of it yet.

And there you have it :) That is essentially how I draw linearts... :3 Mr. Crowrang is shaping up pretty nicely and looking very inviting I think.
